Dracula: A Comedy of Terrors

Steve Rosen (he/him) has previously collaborated with Gordon Greenberg on the musical The Secret of My Success (co-book, Joseph Jefferson nomination), the plays Crime and Punishment, a Comedy (Old Globe) and Ebenezer Scrooge’s BIG Christmas Show (Old Globe, George Street Playhouse), as well as podcasts Dracula, A Comedy of Terrors and Rolling Calls (Broadway Podcast Network). He has also co-written (with David Rossmer) the book, music and lyrics of 50 First Dates, The Musical (London, The Other Palace), The Griswolds’ Broadway Vacation (Seattle’s 5th Ave) and The Other Josh Cohen (off-Broadway), which was nominated for six Drama Desk Awards, as well as the Lucille Lortel and Off-Broadway Alliance Awards for Best New Musical. He has twice co-written the Drama Desk Awards and co-created the long-running Broadway improv/variety show Don’t Quit Your Night Job, devising original comedy material for artists like Sting, Lin Manuel Miranda and Ariana Grande. @stevierosen

Gordon Greenberg has directed on Broadway, off-Broadway and in London’s West End, written for television and stage, and developed, directed and produced new works for arts institutions across America.

Current directing/writing projects include The Heart of Rock and Roll, which opens on Broadway at the James Earl Jones Theatre in April 2024, following its record-breaking run at The Old Globe, the hit off-Broadway show Dracula, A Comedy of Terrors (Director & Co-Writer with Steve Rosen, New World Stages & podcast starring John Stamos, Laura Benanti and Annaleigh Ashford), a new musical about Picasso (directing and co-writing with Stephen Schwartz and Caridad Svich), the NBC television series Most Talkative (Co-Executive Producer/Writer, NBC, Blumhouse, Andy Cohen), Crime and Punishment, A Comedy (directing and co-writing with Steve Rosen) for the Old Globe, a London revival of The Baker’s Wife (Menier Chocolate Factory, 2024), Single White Female (A.T.G.), The Wedding Banquet (Ang Lee, Hua Musicals, Taiwan), Ghost Tour, The Play and the new comedy podcast series Rolling Calls, starring Julie Halston and Richard Kind (co-writer, Steve Rosen).

His acclaimed revival of Who’s Afraid of Virgina Woolf starring Calista Flockhart and Zachary Quinto at the Geffen Playhouse won the Los Angeles Drama Critics Award for Best Revival. Variety called it “inspired,” the L.A. Times called it “unerringly good…Quinto and Flockhart expose something infinitely fragile in Edward Albee’s shatterproof play,” Entertainment Weekly called it “a riveting production…brilliantly staged by Gordon Greenberg” and the Wall Street Journal called it “intriguing…here, unusually, there is the suggestion that the oncoming dawn may truly presage a fragile new beginning.”

Other work includes the North American premiere of Piaf/Dietrich for Mirvish in Toronto (Dora Award, Best Production), Barnum (Menier Chocolate Factory, London), The Secret Party: Jacques Brel 1968 (Das Vindobona, Vienna, Austria), Secret of My Success for Universal Pictures Stage Productions, and Ebenezer Scrooge’s Big [Your Town Here] Christmas Show! in its third season at the Old Globe (co-writer Steve Rosen.)

His West End revival of Guys and Dolls was nominated for six Olivier Awards at the Savoy Theatre and then transferred to the Phoenix Theatre (starring Rebel Wilson). The New York Times’ Ben Brantley called it “pure, unforced pleasure…a boozy, bawdy party.” The Guardian’s Michael Billington called it “an expert revival…delivered with grace and elan,” the Evening Standard said “this unstoppable hit keeps getting better and better…Gordon Greenberg’s delicious production of Frank Loesser’s classy classic once again boasts chemistry in all the right places,” The Telegraph’s Charles Spencer wrote, “I left the theatre walking on air and with a grin of pure happiness on my face,” and The London Times’ Dominic Maxwell wrote, “Gordon Greenberg’s production leaves the whole audience purring with pleasure.”

Greenberg co-wrote and directed the Broadway stage adaptation of Irving Berlin’s Holiday Inn at Studio 54 for Roundabout Theatre Company, Universal Pictures Stage Productions and PBS Television’s Great Performances. In its review, Variety said “Holiday Inn, the 1942 film, has gotten a complete and first-class stage redo…Director Gordon Greenberg and co-writer Chad Hodge have significantly rethought, reshaped and revitalized the script, giving the show more heart, a modern sensibility and a joyful spirit.” Deadline called it “an endorphin assault, inducing warm bath pleasure like no other show since 42nd Street,” The Hollywood Reporter called it “pure joy,” and the Star Ledger said “directed with generosity and warmth, it wears down all defenses.”

Born in Texas and raised in New York, Greenberg performed in his first Broadway show at age 12. He attended Stanford University and NYU Film School before joining J. Walter Thompson Worldwide for a stint as a producer/director of commercials. He then moved back into theatre – first performing on Broadway and on television, and soon directing and writing. He was a curator for Ars Nova, director of musical theatre development at The New Group, and Artistic Producer at Musical Theatre Works, where he created the writers development program and the New Voices workshop series. He is also deeply involved in arts education and is Co-Director of The Broadway Teaching Group, Broadway’s largest education program, in conjunction with Music Theatre International and Playbill. He has taught masterclasses at Yale University, University of Michigan, University of Oklahoma, Belmont University, Hartt School of Music, Broadway Moscow, Broadway Berlin and Arts Ed London.

He is a member of the Stage Directors and Choreographers Society, The Writers Guild of America, The Dramatists Guild and the Lincoln Center Theatre Directors Lab.

Maggie Braun (Stage Manager) is thrilled to be back at her theatre home! SRT: Steel Magnolias, Murder on the Orient Express, Route 66, The Wizard of Oz, Baskerville: A Sherlock Holmes Mystery, and Million Dollar Quartet. With her associate degree in Theater from Modesto Junior College, she is proud to have her dream job here in Sonora. Dane is a Los Angeles based actor and fight choreographer. He most recently directed the combat for Sierra Rep’s The Shawshank Redemption and The Three Musketeers. Previous favorites include She Kills Monsters, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime, and anytime he can get his hands on a shakespearean duel. His background is in competitive fencing, martial arts, and parkour, but the best training came from falling out of trees as a child. The concussions don’t seem to have affected him all that badly.

Laurie Strawn is delighted to be a Resident Company member at SRT. Recent SRT roles: Glinda/Aunt Em in The Wizard of Oz, Jack’s Mother in Into the Woods, Mrs. Tottendale in The Drowsy Chaperone. Other SRT favorites include: Old Woman/Blair in Sunday in the Park with George, Annie Wilkes in Misery, and Clairee in Steel Magnolias. Brittni is overjoyed to make her first appearance at Sierra Repertory Theatre. She is a long time Company Member at B Street Theatre and a regular guest artist at Capital Stage in Sacramento. Some of her favorite past roles include Nora in A Doll’s House (CapStage), Sylvia in Tribes (CapStage), Sally Ride in Ride, Sally Ride (B Street), Michele in Love and Baseball (B Street Theatre, Theatre L’Homme Dieu, Minnesota), Maisie in Insertion (winner of the 2024 New Comedies Festival, B Street) and playing Elizabeth Bennet eight times over the span of ten years (CapStage). She studied theatre at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts CAP21 program as well as at CSU Sacramento. She currently lives in San Diego and does fun commercials for companies like Lume, Glamnetic, Fairytales Hair Care, Lomi, DudeWipes, and many, many more. Brendan is absolutely thrilled to be making his Sierra Rep Debut in these two hysterical productions! The son of two Air Force Colonels, Brendan received his BFA in Acting from Oklahoma City University, and is currently living as an actor and voice actor in Los Angeles. He was recently seen as Ariel in The Tempest with Chanticleer Shakespeare, and Brutus in Julius Caesar with Shakespeare by the Sea. Other stage credits include: Almost, Maine (Rubicon Theatre); Boeing Boeing (Village Barn Playhouse); Much Ado About Nothing (Oklahoma City Rep); Macbeth (The Classical Theatre of Maryland); A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Colorado Springs FAC); Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme (Classical Tahoe). Brendan has also recorded several national radio commercials and audiobooks, including his recent narration of the finale of the Side Quest Row Trilogy, A Draught for a Dragon (now on Audible). Irish author Abraham “Bram” Stoker was born in Clontarf, Ireland, on November 8, 1847. He studied history, literature, mathematics, and physics at Trinity College, Dublin, where he was named University Athlete, despite a recurring illness that confined him to his bed as a child. After graduating with honors in Mathematics, Stoker began working as a civil servant in Dublin Castle. During his eight years there, he published short stories, including “The Crystal Cup” and “The Chain of Destiny,” and worked as a critic for Dublin’s “Evening Mail” and as an editor of “The Irish Echo.” In 1878, Stoker moved to London with his wife after Sir Henry Irving offered him the position of business manager at his Lyceum Theatre. In London, Stoker published his first book, “Under the Sunset” (1882), a collection of fairy tales, and in 1890 he published his first novel, “The Snake’s Pass.” He began researching for “Dracula” the same year, and in 1897, it was published. The novel brought Stoker international acclaim and has since been adapted numerous times for the stage and the screen. Stoker continued to write until his death in 1912. His other works include “The Jewel of Seven Stars,” “Personal Reminiscences of Henry Irving,” and “The Lair of the White Worm.”

Christopher is always excited to work with Sierra Rep. SRT: Shrek The Musical, Baskerville, Man of La Mancha, Sweeney Todd, and Macbeth. Christopher lives in New York now, with his wife Christine Rowan and their daughter Vivian. He is known for his succinct bios.

Brenda O’Brien began her theater career in San Diego, where she was seen as Judas in Godspell, Louise in Gypsy, Nicki in Sweet Charity, and Viola in Twelfth Night (to name a few). She received awards for her roles as Ouisa in Six Degrees of Separation, Joan in Dames at Sea, Aldonza in Man of La Mancha, and Electra in Gypsy. Brenda then went on to perform as Svetlana in the 1st National tour of Chess. Soon after she began portraying Carmen San Diego on the PBS television show and video games. In addition to acting, Brenda is an accomplished make-up artist and hairdresser for TV, Film, and Theater. She received her 25 years on Broadway pin in 2019 for her work on Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, Les Misérables, Jekyll & Hyde, and Disney’s The Lion King. SRT Audiences might remember her as Tanya in Mamma Mia (2018), or as Tootie in Meet Me in St. Louis (2021). So glad to be back!
